神様はアダムを作るとき、「土（アダマ）の塵で人（アダム）を形作り、その鼻に命の息を吹き入れられた。人はこうして生きる者となった。」（「創世記」2:7）とあるように、ただの息ではなく「命の息」（breath of life）を土人形の鼻から吹き入れられると、たちまち生きた人間が出現しました。これが人類の祖といわれる男アダムです。

イエスご自身も十字架の上で亡くなるとき、「大きな声で叫び、息を引き取られた」（「マタイによる福音書」27:50）とあるように、「息を引き取る」という言い方は、洋の東西を問わず「命が絶える」こと、すなわち「死ぬ」ことを言います。英語では「息を引き取る」は breathe one's last（最後の息をする）と言います。breathe one's last breath の略です。

ところが、breathed his lastの代わりに gave up his spirit や yielded up his spirit を用いている英訳聖書が少なくないのは、もとのギリシャ語πνενμα（pneuma）から訳しているからです。というのは、ギリシャ語の pneuma にはいろんな意味があって、「風」「息」「霊」「聖霊」「神の霊」「精神」などを表すのに用います。

風も息も霊もみんな同じ言葉というのは、現代人には理解しにくい話ですが、古代人はどれも不思議な神の力と考えたのでしょう。イエスが、ユダヤの最高会議の議員でパリサイ派の律法の教師であったニコデモという人の質問に答えて次のように言われたのは有名な話です。「風は思いのままに吹く。あなたはその音を聞いても、それがどこから来て、どこへ行くのかを知らない。霊から生まれた者も皆そのとおりである。」（「ヨハネによる福音書」3章8節）この話に出てくる「風」も「霊」も原語のギリシャ語は pneuma です。
