キリスト教の神は、やおよろずの神々（gods）ではなく、唯一の存在、すなわち唯一神です。キリスト教の神は、常に単数無冠詞で固有名詞のように大文字で始まる God です。多神教にたいしてキリスト教は一神教と呼ばれますが、この唯一の存在を父と子と聖霊の３つの位格（ペルソナ）で理解することはなかなか難しいので、神学者でない私のようなドシロウトには手に負えません。
聖書には、三位一体の神（the Trinity）という語は出てきませんが、「マタイによる福音書」 28章19節 には「父と子と聖霊の名によって洗礼を授け…」と書いてありますし、これにしたがって今日でも「父と子と聖霊の御名によって」と言って洗礼が授けられているのですから、ひとまず納得したことにして先へ進みましょう。
父は Father 子は Son ですが、聖霊は Holy Spirit といいます。
ところで、キリストの復活・昇天の後、五旬節（過越祭の第１日から数えて５０日目）の日に、エルサレムの家に集まっていた弟子たちの上に不思議なことが起こりました。聖霊が彼らの上に降ったのです。
突然、激しい風が吹いてくるような音が天から聞こえ、彼らが座っていた家中に響きわたったかと思うと、炎のような舌が分かれ分かれに現われて、一人一人の上にとどまったのです。すると、一同は聖霊に満たされて、霊が語らせるままに、ほかの国々の言葉で話しだしました。この話の続きは英語でどうぞ。
「炎のような舌」の英訳は聖書によってさまざまです。what looked like tongues of fire; what looked like flames of tongues; what seemed to be tongues of fire; tongues like flames of fire; flames like tongues of fire; tongues
as of fire などです。古いところでは1611年の欽定訳聖書(King James Version)の cloven tongues like as of fire というのもあります。
Seven weeks had gone by since Jesus' death and resurrection, and the Day of Pentecost had now arrived. As the believers met together that day, suddenly there was a sound like the roaring of a mighty windstorm in the skies above them and it filled the house where they were meeting. Then, what looked like flames of tongues of fire appeared and settled on their heads. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in languages they didn't know, for the Holy Spirit gave them this ability . . . .
"How can this be?" they exclaimed. "For these men are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking all the native languages of the lands where we were born! . . . .And we all hear these men telling in our own languages about the mighty miracles of God! . . . .
But others in the crowd were mocking. "They're drunk, that's all!" they said.
