イエスは、生前に三度弟子たちに予告していたように、死刑を宣告され十字架の上で処刑され、葬られて３日後に復活されます。この「復活」（resurrection）は、キリスト教の教理の核心をなすもので、単に死者が肉体的に生き返る（蘇生する）ことではありません。信仰上の問題です。
トルストイの有名な長編小説『復活』は直接これに題材をとったものではありませんが、ここでも、青年貴族ネフリュードフがかつて誘惑した娘カチューシャが、娼婦となって無実の殺人罪に問われ、女囚となっているのを知り、彼女の新生を助け、精神的に復活するまでの過程が書かれています。女性が頭髪につけるカチューシャ止めでおなじみの人のほうが多いかもしれませんね。
復活のイエスはご自分が生きていることを、数多くの証拠によって使徒たちに示されました。イエスは４０日にわたって彼らの前に姿を表わし、神の国（the Kingdom of Heaven→30）について話されました。
使徒言行録1章6-11節によると、使徒たちは集まってイエスに尋ねました。
「イスラエルのために王国を建て直してくださるのは今ですか。」
イエスは答えられました。
「神様がお決めになった時期について、あなたがたが知ることは許されていない。そのうちあなたがたに聖霊が降ると、あなたがたは力を授けられ、全世界にむかってわたしを証しすることなるだろう。」
イエスは話し終わると使徒たちの目の前で天に上げられ、雲に覆われて見えなくなりました。すると、白い服を着た２人の男の人が彼らのそばに立って言いました。
「ガリラヤの人たち、なぜ天を見上げているのですか。天に上げられたイエスは、あなたがたが見たのと同じようにして、またおいでになるのです。」
When the apostles met together with Jesus, they asked him,"Lord, will you at this time give the Kingdom back to Israel?"
Jesus said to them,"The times and occasions are set by my Father's own authority, and it is not for you to know when they will be. But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be filled with power, and you will be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
After saying this, he was taken up to heaven as they watched him, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
They still had their eyes fixed on the sky as he went away, when two men dressed in white suddenly stood beside them and said,"Galileans, why are you standing there looking up at the sky? This Jesus, who was taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way that you saw him go to heaven."
