トマスはマタイ・マルコ・ルカの福音書では単に１２弟子の名前のリストの中ほどに登場するだけですが、「ヨハネによる福音書」(20章24-29節)では重要な役割を果たしています。
復活のイエスが弟子たちに現われたとき、トマスはたまたま彼らといっしょにいませんでした。トマスは「イエスの姿を自分の目で確かめるまでは復活を信じない」と言い張ったので、 doubting Thomasというあだ名で呼ばれるようになりました。猜疑心が強いといった悪いイメージではなく、自分の目で確かめるまでは人が言うことを鵜呑みにしない、証拠なしには信じない、という意味です。ただし、聖書には doubting Thomas という表現はありません。
８日後（こんどはトマスもいました）、再び弟子たちに現われたイエスはトマスに言われました。「あなたの指をここに当てて、わたしの手を見なさい。また、あなたの手を伸ばして、わたしのわき腹にいれなさい。」
トマスは「双子」と呼ばれていましたが、彼のことをイエスの双子の兄弟の一人と考える人もいます。また、ペルシャに宣教したとか、インドで宣教し、そこで殉教したという説もあります。現在も、インドの聖トマス教会はトマスの宣教によって設立されたと主張しているそうです
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord. " But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe. "
Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you. " Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing. "
Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God! " Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."
