聖書ではパンとぶどう酒は特別の意味を持っています。パンはキリストの「体」、ぶどう酒はキリストの「血」と考えられているからです。
古来、多くの画家が描いているキリスト教絵画のなかで、いちばん有名なもののひとつは、レオナルド・ダ・ヴィンチの「最後の晩餐」でしょう。これはイエスがローマ兵に捕らえられる前に弟子たちとともにした最後の食事の模様を描いたものです。
イエスはこの席で、パンを裂いて弟子たちに与え、「これはあなたがたに与えられるわたしの体である。わたしの記念としてこのように行いなさい」と言い、杯を渡して「これは、多くの人のために流されるわたしの血、契約の血である」と言われました。
教会では、これを守るべき典礼の基礎として、カトリック教会では「ミサ」、プロテスタント教会では「聖餐（式）」と呼んで、今日も行っています。
イエスをローマの官憲に売り渡した裏切り者のユダ（イスカリオテのユダ）もこの晩餐に加わっています。キリストの左三人目だそうですが、なにぶん修道院の食堂の壁に描かれた古いフレスコ画ですから、傷んでいてよくわかりません。
Then Jesus took a cup, gave thanks to God, and said,"Take this and share it among yourselves. I tell you that from now on I will not drink this wine until the Kingdom of God comes."
Then he took a piece of bread, gave thanks to God, broke it, and gave it to them, saying,"This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in memory of me."
In the same way, he gave them the cup after supper, saying,"This cup is God's new covenant sealed with my blood, which is poured out for you."
"But, look! The one who betrays me is here at the table with me! The Son of Man will die as God has decided, but how terrible for that man who betrays him!"
Then they began to ask among themselves which one of them it could be who was going to do this.
