どこの国でも子供は耳から聞いたことを意味もわからずに反復するものです。例えば、アメリカの子供がよく間違えるのは、(1) Our Father who charts in heaven （天でチャートを描くわれらの父よ）とか、 (2) Lead us not into Penn Station （わたしたちをペン駅へ連れて行かないで）などです。私なども幼稚園のころ Jesus loves me, this I know. （主われを愛す）を 「Jesus loves me, 実際のー」などと歌っていました。
(1) は昔、先行詞が「人」であっても関係代名詞はwho でなく which を用いていましたので、例えば、欽定訳聖書（1611）では、「天にましますわれらの父よ」は Our Father which art in heaven《現代英語なら . . . who is in heaven》と言っていました。
その後、今日でも広く使われている聖書（Revised Standard Version, 1971）でも、祈りの言葉というものは古めかしいものが好まれるのか、上の which art を who is に変えただけで用いられています。
(2) は、Lead us not into temptation（わたしたちを誘惑に遭わせないで）で、現代英語なら Do not lead us into temptationとなるところです。
次の、Revised Standard Version, 1971と New International Version, 1984 の二通りの「主の祈り」を比較してみてください。
