15 バベルの塔（Tower of Babel）

バベルの塔は聖書を読んだことがない人でもたぶんどこかで聞いたことがある有名な話です。日本語では「バベル」ですが、英語では「ベイボー」のように聞こえます。はじけて不景気の元凶となった「泡」という意味の「バブル（bubble）」ではありません。「たわごと」という意味の「バブル（babble）」でもありません。英語の Babel は母音が [ei] ですから、「バベル」とはほど遠く聞こえますから《発音に注意》です。

ノアの箱船（Noah's Ark）（→14）で難を逃れ、生き延びることを許されたノアの息子のひとり、セムの子孫たちはシメール（シュメール地方）に移り住むと、またもやとんでもないことを考えだしました。彼らは奢り高ぶる気持ちを抑えることができず、町の中心に高い塔を建てて天まで届かせようとしたのです。同一の民族が同一の言葉を話すことによって強大になりすぎ、やがて神に追い付き追い越そうとするのを阻止しようとして、神は彼らの言葉を混乱させたのです。荒唐無稽の話と思うかもしれませんが、現在でも日干しレンガとアスファルトで作ったいくつかのジッグラドと呼ばれる塔が考古学的発掘によって発見されているのです。バベルはアッカド語で「神の門」、ヘブライ語で「混乱させる」という意味だそうです。

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

They said to each other,"Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly. They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The Lord said,"If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel--because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
