新約聖書の冒頭（マタイによる福音書1章1節）に「アブラハムの子ダビデの子、イエス・キリストの系図」とあります。以下17節までは、延々と人名ばかり並んでいます。初めて聖書を手にした人が、新約聖書から勇んで読み始めると、まずここで戦意を喪失するといわれる有名な箇所です。ほんとうは重要な内容が盛られているのですが、それがわかるのはずっと後のことですから、こんなところは飛ばして読めばいいのですが、気の小さい人にはそうもいきません。のっけから脱線してしまいましたが、このアブラハムから数えて１０代目のノアという人が、実は今週の主人公なのです。この話は「創世記」6〜8章に出てくる有名な『大洪水物語』ですから、知っている人が多いでしょう。
天地創造の大事業が、アダムの失楽園物語や、カインとアベル血生臭い事件などで、うまくいかないことを知った神は、後悔してもういちど出直そうと決心しました。神は、地上に悪がはびこってどうにもならない状態になったので、太初の混沌（chaos）からもういちど創世の事業をやり直そうとして、こう言われました。
『私は人を創造したが、これを地上からぬぐい去ろう。人だけでなく、家畜も這うものも空の鳥も。私はこれらを造ったことを後悔する。』（「創世記」6章7節）
"I will wipe out mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth─men and animals and creatures that move along the ground, and birds of the air─for I am grieved that I have made them."

「しかし、神はノアにだけは好意を持っていました。」（創世記6章8節）
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.（Genesis 6:8）
「ノアは神に従う無垢な人であった。ノアは神と共に歩んだ。」（「創世記」6章9節）
Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.（Genesis 6:9）
"I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark─you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you. You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them."
