Samaritan は「サマリア人〔の〕」という意味ですが、good Samaritan というと「親切で善良な人」という意味の代名詞のように用いられます。英訳聖書の中には〔The〕Parable of the good Samaritan（よきサマリア人のたとえ）という小見出しをつけているものもいくつかありますが、本文の中に good Samaritan という言い方があるわけではありません。ただ、「ルカによる福音書」10章25-37節の話があまりにも有名になったので、Samaritan といえば good Samaritan を連想するようになったのです。
ただ、新約聖書のサマリア人のことをよりよく理解するには、次のことを知っておくといいでしょう。彼らは北王国イスラエルの滅亡後、アッシリア王によって移住させられた植民者の子孫であったため、混血の外国人として差別され、ユダヤ人からさげすまれていました。イエスが１２人の弟子たちを派遣するときにも、「サマリア人の町に入ってはならない」（マタイによる福音書10：5）と言われたくらいです。また、イエスが最後にエルサレムへ向かわれたときにも、「サマリアの村人はイエスを歓迎しなかった」（ルカによる福音書9：53）と記されています。
ある律法の専門家がイエスを試そうとして、「私の隣人とはだれのことですか」と尋ねたのにたいして、イエスは「よきサマリア人」のたとえで答えられます。
Parable of the good Samaritan The lawyer said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
Jesus replied, "A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jerico and fell into the hands of brigands; they took all he had, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead.
"Now a priest happened to be traveling down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.
"In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side.
"But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion when he saw him. He went up and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him on his own mount, carried him to the inn and looked after him.
"Next day, he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and on my way back I will make good any extra expense you have.'
"Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbor to the man who fell into the brigands' hands?"
"The one who took pity on him," he replied.
Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same yourself."
