英訳聖書では、a grain of wheat, a wheat grain, a kernel of wheat, a corn of wheat などと訳されています。
「一粒」といえば、小学生のころのグリコの「一粒５００メートル」を思い出しますが、同志社中学で聖書に巡り会い、「一粒の麦、地に落ちて死なずば、唯一つにてあらん、もし死なば、多くの実を結ぶべし」（当時の聖書は《文語訳》でした）という箇所を読んだときのことを思い出します。はじめはどうしても合点が行かなかったことを覚えています。一粒の麦が死ぬということは、麦が枯渇してしまうことと思っていたからです。
ところが、「一粒の麦」は、聖書では、イエス自身の生命を表わしており、それが死ぬというのは、「イエスの十字架上の死」を表わしています。「一粒の麦は、そのままでは一粒だが、地中で消滅し芽を出せば、やがて多くの実を結ぶ（一人の犠牲によって多くの人が救われる）」というキリストの教え、死を目前にしたキリストの覚悟を端的に表わしています。それにしても、英語の die には「死ぬ、枯れる」という意味があるのですから、中学生が誤解するのも無理はなかったと思います。
フランスの小説家アンドレ・ジイドは、「一粒の麦もし死なずば」という題名の自伝的小説に、若い日の苦悩を書いていますし、石坂洋次郎の初期の小説にも「麦死なず」というのがあります。
ヨハネによる福音書のこの箇所は、イエスが最後にエルサレムに上られたときの話です。折しもエルサレムは、ユダヤ教の三大祭の一つである過越しの祭（the Passover）の直前で、国内はもとより国外からのユダヤ人もおおぜい参拝にきていて、町はごったがえしていました。この中に当時異邦人と呼ばれていたギリシャ人がまじっていました。
Some Greeks were among those who went to Jerusalem to worship during the feast. They came to Philip and said,"Sir, we want to see Jesus."
Philip went and told Andrew, and the two of them went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them,"The hour has now come for the Son of Man to be given great glory. I tell you the truth:a grain of wheat remains no more than a single grain unless it is dropped into the ground and dies. If it does die, then produces many grains. Whoever loves his own life will lose it; whoever hates his own life in this world will keep it for life eternal. Whoever wants to serve me must follow me, so that my servant will be with me where I am. My Father will honor him who serves me.
