才能（talent）があってもなくても、ラジオやテレビに出演している人のことを日本語でタレントというようですが、これは聖書のタラントンに由来します。英語の talent はもともと「（神から与えられた）才能、天分」という意味ですが、聖書では貨幣の単位として用いられています。１タラントンは、当時の約１６年分の賃金に当たるそうですから、たいへんな金額です。このタラントンの話は、新約聖書では２回出てきます。そのうちの１回は有名な寓話「タラントンのたとえ」です。
ある人が長旅に出かけるときに、３人の使用人に財産を預けました。それぞれの力に応じて、Aには５タラントン、Bには２タラントン、Cには１タラントンを預けました。主人の留守中、AとBは預かったお金で商売をし、それぞれ倍に増やしましたが、Cだけは１タラントンをそのまま地中に隠して保管しておきました。旅から帰った主人は、AとBを大いにほめましたが、Cは「銀行に入れておけば利息がついたのに」と叱りつけ、その１タラントンもAに与えるように言いました。
昨今は銀行や証券会社がつぶれる時代ですから、タラントンを地に埋めるのがいちばん安全かもしれませんが、それでも、才能は働かせるために神から預かっているものですから、働かせる人の才能はますます豊かになり、働かせない人は持っている才能まで失う、というお話です。
Then he (the master) went out. The man who had received the five talents promptly went and traded with them and made five more. The man who had received two made two more in the same way. But the man who had received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.
Now a long time after, the master of these servants came back and went through his accounts with them. The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. "Sir," he said, "you entrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made.' His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness." . . . Last came forward the man who had the one talent."Sir," said he, "I had heard you were a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered; so I was afraid, and I went off and hid your talent in the ground. Here it is; it was yours, you have it back." But his master answered him, "You wicked and lazy servant! . . . Well then, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have recovered my capital with interest."
